As the name suggests Deep Tissue Massage works at a deeper muscular level than a Classic Swedish Massage. It is suited to clients who like the relief that deeper tissue work can bring to areas of tension in the body. A Deep Tissue Massage will specifically target problematic areas of bodily stress and strain. The level of a deep tissue massage reaches soft tissues deep in the body that are not usually touched by regular Swedish massage.
Deep Tissue Massage uses slow, long, flowing stokes and involves the use of the therapist’s forearms, elbows, fists, palms and thumbs to focus on specific areas of the body to release and loosen the tissue. Body weight may also be used if needed.
For those who have never tried a Deep Tissue Massage before, possibly imagining that it might be painful, fear not. The pace of this massage is slow, the pressure is introduced slowly and deeply with care and respect for the body. Muscles are warmed up and only areas that need it are given deep tissue massage. It is the quickest way to deal with areas of muscular tension and the relief is instant.
A body that is not relaxed will not allow a therapist to work deeply so when we work that is our intention, total relaxation. When the body is relaxed the mind will follow. As a multi-disciplinary practitioner that works on a holistic level we include some classic massage techniques to other areas of the body to aid the relaxation process.
Deep Tissue Massage is excellent for relaxing and loosening tight muscles, tissues and stiff joints where a deeper massage is required. The benefits of Deep Tissue Massage include improved circulation, body functioning and flexibility. It can help ease stress, muscle fatigue and release “knots” in tissues. A Deep Tissue Massage can aid total relaxation which will in turn help the client to get a better night’s sleep outside of the treatment. It helps address postural issues and musculoskeletal imbalances and helps to integrate the mind and body.
The techniques used in a Deep Tissue Massage will usually involve the therapist using their forearms and knuckles more than their fingers however Pure Tranquil Beauty have their own Signature massage which includes a combination of techniques. The size or gender of the therapist does not determine the level of deepness. The massage table is low, allowing the therapist to use their body weight to apply deeper pressure. The warmth created from the initial massage techniques allows the muscles to loosen and receive deeper work which is gently introduced.
A Deep Tissue Massage lasts for an hour or 90 minutes. Please allow extra time for your first treatment in order for a full consultation to be carried out. The massage is performed on a massage couch and the therapist uses massage oil or wax. Less massage oil is used than in a Classic Swedish Massage as the therapist requires more grip to slowly work with the muscles that are tense. The massage is slower than a Swedish Massage and more specifically targeted to problem areas. More time will be spent on areas that need it according to the client’s needs.
Here at Pure Tranquil Therapies a deep Tissue massage may feel different from other deep tissue massages clients have experienced.
We do not believe that massage should hurt to the point where you are gritting your teeth and wanting to jump off the couch. Without question of a doubt there are sore or tender spots, but there is a difference between tenderness and pain. Many people have that “no pain, no gain” mentality and believe that the more pain they are in after a massage, the better the massage was. This cannot be further from the truth.
Deep Pressure Massage
When you have a deep tissue massage and you feel the therapist is beating you up or really digging into you, that is actually a deep pressure massage.
Human tissue just does not respond well to this kind of massage. The more and harder you push into the muscles, the more the muscle tissues will push back, so when a therapist works harder, they are actually working less deep in the tissue and not carrying out a productive massage.
This type of massage is more likely to leave you feeling pain, sore and even bruised, which is your body reacting negatively. It is normal to feel some soreness after a massage, but to be in pain or hardly be able to move is not a healthy response to body work and is actually a hinderance to any recovery. Some methods will leave you feeling more sore than others, but none of them should leave you in pain.
Deep Tissue Massage
If deep tissue massage is not just pressing harder, what is the difference? The difference is deep tissue massage simply means that the work I do as a therapist gets deeper into the muscles and other structures in the body. The best way to do this is to work slowly. When firm steady pressure is applied without pushing, the tissue in the clients body starts to melt and soften. Once the tissue has softened sufficiently, deeper work into the body can begin to access the deeper structures.
Deep tissue massage should feel good and there should be minimal pain. A lot of clients have trouble telling the difference between regular massage and deep tissue work.
Massages shouldn’t hurt. It is important to recognise the difference between soreness, tenderness, and pain. Pain is a response from your body telling you that something is wrong. If your massage therapist is causing you pain, tell them. Please be kind to yourself and your massage therapist by not asking for a deep pressure massage, your body will thank you for it.
To best choose between a classic massage and a deep tissue massage you will be looking at their key components. A classic Swedish massage is for more relaxation and to create increased circulation of blood and lymph, for relief of pain, improved mood and better sleep. With this massage you can have light medium or firm pressure.
You’ll want to choose a deep tissue massage for chronic pains that are more muscular in origin, to help your posture and range of motion during the healing process. In many cases it takes 2 to 3 sessions for you to feel relief, Please keep in mind that you do not have to choose one or the other here a Pure Tranquil Therapies our Signature massages incorporates both techniques as a Deep Tissue massage is carried out on areas of the body which need it. Should you feel in chronic pain and require a Full body deep tissue massage it is advised to book in for a 90 minute session.
*Should you need advice on which massage to choose please do contact us and we will be more than happy to advise.
